Joy of Mahatmy

What is Mahatmy?

Mahatmy means value, importance, and the joy of realization.
It is the fruit of true understanding — the feeling of greatness that makes everything else seem small in comparison.
It is the source that leads from divine joy to deep spiritual experience.

The Place of Mahatmy in Satsang

Mahatmy is the life and soul of Satsang (spiritual fellowship).
It keeps the Satsang alive, active, and full of energy.

Just as strong foundations keep a building stable,
Mahatmy keeps Satsang firm and steady.
Like water that nourishes a plant, Mahatmy nourishes the devotee’s heart and keeps faith fresh.

In Vachanamrut Loya 17, Lord Shriji Maharaj said:

“One who understands the greatness of God and His Saints will always remain firm in Satsang.”

The Connection Between Knowledge and Mahatmy

Lord Shriji Maharaj is supreme and eternal — realizing this truth is spiritual knowledge.
Knowledge is the foundation of ultimate salvation.

Maharaj explained:

“If a child holds a precious gem but doesn’t know its value, he feels no joy.
In the same way, even if one has attained God but does not feel complete happiness within, it means he lacks Mahatmy.”

So, even if we have faith (nishchay) but not Mahatmy, our heart feels empty and we don’t feel spiritually fulfilled.
That’s why both knowledge and Mahatmy must exist together.

In Shikshapatri verse 103, Shriji Maharaj says:

“True devotion is deep love for God, combined with both knowledge and understanding of His greatness.”

Knowledge alone can make devotion dry,
and Mahatmy alone can make it blind or emotional without direction.
But when both are balanced, devotion becomes full of experience, joy, and meaning.

For example:
When a fried sweet (like a crisp piece of dough) is dipped in syrup, it becomes delicious.
Here, knowledge is like the fried piece, and Mahatmy is like the syrup.
Only when both mix together does it become true devotion.

The Relationship Between Mahatmy and Devotion

Devotees in Satsang engage in spiritual practices and devotion to please God.
But these efforts bear their highest fruit only when they are filled with Mahatmy.

Without Mahatmy, Satsang is like a vehicle without fuel
it may look good, but it cannot move forward.

Mahatmy is the foundation stone of Satsang.
When Satsang begins with Mahatmy, it transforms a person’s entire life.
Such a person lives with complete surrender and divine purpose.

The Qualities of a Devotee Who Has Mahatmy

In Vachanamrut Loya 3, Shriji Maharaj said:

“One who has firm faith and understanding of God and His Saints’ greatness can sacrifice anything for God —
family, social respect, kingdom, wealth, comfort, even attachment to one’s spouse.”

For one who truly realizes Mahatmy, worldly life feels insignificant,
and only God feels truly meaningful.
Attachment to material things fades,
and one’s spiritual determination becomes strong and unshakable.

This is the amazing power of Mahatmy
it can make the impossible possible.

Mahatmy awakens joy, gratitude, and inner devotion.
When it is missing, dryness and restlessness arise.
A devotee who understands the greatness of every part of Satsang can never be shaken,
even by difficult circumstances.

The Strength of Mahatmy

In Vachanamrut Gadhada Pratham 72, Shriji Maharaj said:

“A devotee who deeply knows the greatness of God, His Saints, and Satsang —
even if he faces tough times or his karma is harsh,
his devotion is so powerful that nothing can defeat him.”

And if a person lacks Mahatmy, even if God wishes to bless him,
it does not happen easily.
Thus, only those who have Mahatmy become truly dear to God.

The Experience of One Who Has Mahatmy

Shriji Maharaj said:

“One who has firm faith along with Mahatmy feels —
‘From the day I saw God, my salvation began.
Anyone who lovingly looks upon God or follows His words is blessed —
so I am surely blessed too!’”

Conclusion

Mahatmy is the life of Satsang, the foundation of devotion, and the path to salvation.
Let us all follow Shriji Maharaj’s divine message —
to live with awareness of God’s greatness,
to keep our Satsang alive with Mahatmy,
to stay joyful in all situations,
and to experience true spiritual fulfillment.
