Rooted in Hinduism, the Swaminarayan religion has flourished far beyond India, reaching communities in many countries around the world. Amongst the diverse sects within Hinduism, it is widely regarded as one of the most respected and influential. From our humble beginnings dated back to 1802, we have been steadily marching into new horizons. Our founder, Lord Swaminarayan, created this religion on the foundations of spirituality and social wellbeing. We strive tirelessly to achieve our purpose of uplifting the people of society.
Lord Swaminarayan was aware of the unique link between spirituality and social wellbeing. He knew that social service is founded on morality and compassion found only in spirituality. In His time, He performed many wonderful activities and events with both these foundational values in mind.
Even today, these two values are prevalent in all of our activity as the very structure of the religion has been developed to keep them intact for eons to come. Spirituality radiated naturally from Lord Swaminarayan. To pass it onto His followers, He created revolutionary practices that lead to profound inner growth. Lord Swaminarayan has a vision for the entire world to embark on it and everyone in it on a spiritual journey. To achieve this vision, He established the Swaminarayan religion. For which, Bhagwan Swaminarayan gathered devotees, saints, created scriptures and a constitution.
The fruit of many spiritual activities is the realization of one's true nature as the soul. When this combines with the devotion of God, a new level of inner peace is experienced one achieves a new state never seen - the legendary state of an Anadimukta, ultimate and final liberation!
A benevolent nature encompassed Bhagwan Swaminarayan wherever He went, as He could not stop helping people. Through His time, He began charity kitchens, freed people from superstitions, addictions, broke the infamous sati tradition and gave women a prominent place in society. Bhagwan Swaminarayan destroyed discrimination between castes and barriers between rich-poor by establishing human ideals and principles.
In the foot-steps of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, we here at SMVS sincerely follow His ideals. Our founder is the 6th spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, Gurudev Bapji, whose lineage traces back to the acclaimed sadguru Gopalanand swami (the 1st spiritual successor). Gurudev Bapji established the organization on the special date of Feb 22, 1987. Currently, the 7th spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, HDH Swamishri, leads the organization.
From the vast depths of His wisdom, Gurudev Bapji would comment on the true nature of this organization: “Bhagwan Swaminarayan has created this organization and is the one that breathes life into it. All things happen according to His wish and as long as we understand this, things will continue to happen effortlessly by His grace.” Through us, Bhagwan Swaminarayan performs all activities of the organization. Meaning, Bhagwan Swaminarayan is responsible for this organization and is the one who performs all its activities through us.
The ‘meaning of life’ and ‘God’ are synonymous with each other. The true meaning of life is obtaining liberation, which is the pure understanding of Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s form. It is said that anyone who can grasp the form of God becomes like Him and attains the state of an Anadimukta.
Morality is a key foundation for a healthy and prosperous life. Bhagwan Swaminarayan proposed that following these five values would ensure wellbeing in this world and the next.
The values:
By caring for the spiritual and social needs of the individual, family and society, we here at SMVS are providers of service caring for the wellbeing of all.
